  • Port of Ghent attends to the greening of the port area. Through the realization of an entire framework of green links, land that is economically not useful is given an environmental purpose.   • On Wednesday night, January 30, the bulk carrier ‘AP Jadran’ arrived in Ghent port. This was the very first visit of the ship to Europe. It departed from Port Kembla, Australia, and moored at the Rodenhuizedok after a voyage of more than a month and a half. The vessel’s cargo consisted of rapeseed. On Thursday afternoon, January 31 Ghent Port Company welcomed the ship and her crew and a ceremony was held. Have a look at the pictures of this event.   • On Saturday, September 22, 2012 the Russian vice-minister of transport responsible for the ports, Victor Olersky visited Ghent port. The visit fitted within the framework of a conference on cooperation between Russia and the Belgian ports. The Russian minister and his delegation were welcomed by representatives of Ghent Port Company and by the mayor of Ghent, Daniël Termont, on board of the port yacht ‘Jacob van Artevelde’.   • bekijk videovideo uit In August 2012 the Belgian regional channel AVS broadcast several reports that zoom in on the ro/ro traffic between the ports of Ghent and Gothenburg. Reporter Elke sailed along on the DFDS vessel ‘Tor Begonia’ from Ghent to Gothenburg and discovered the importance of the ro/ro traffic between both ports. The three broadcasts each time highlight a different aspect of this route: the journey aboard the DFDS vessel, discharging cargo in Gothenburg and the port of Gothenburg.   • On Friday, August 24, 2012 a military fleet of three vessels from different countries visited Ghent port: the Belgian navy vessel BNS Godetia, the German FGS Fulda and the Estonian ENS Sakala. The fleet was welcomed by Ghent Port Company. The ships form part of the ‘Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1’ (SNMCMG1), a permanent grouping belonging to NATO that mainly focuses on mine hunting.   • On Monday evening, July 30, 2012 Ghent port received the vessel ‘E-ship 1’ for the first time. This visually special ship was loaded with 48 wind turbine blades in order to be transported to Emden in Germany. ‘E-ship 1’ is eye-catching because of the four cylinders on the ship’s deck.   • On Monday, June 11, 2012 Flemish prime minister Kris Peeters and the Dutch vice-premier Maxime Verhagen opened the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant in Ghent and the Bio Base Europe Training Center in Terneuzen. Bio Base Europe is a joint initiative by Ghent Bio-Energy Valley and Biopark Terneuzen. In the pilot plant in Ghent, companies can have a test carried out to know whether their bio idea is also producible on a large scale.   • On June 6th, 2012 port of Ghent welcomed the DFDS vessel Tor Freesia. This vessel was the first of the three largest DFDS vessels that from now on will be deployed on the successful liner service between Ghent and Sweden.   • On Friday morning, May 25, 2012 Belgium’s heaviest mobile crane made its entry in port of Ghent. The crane belongs to the Ghent stevedoring company Stukwerkers Havenbedrijf. It was a spectacular operation. In the course of the day, the crane was taken from the pontoon and placed on the quay of the Mercatordok.   • Ghent Port Company plans to construct a new building for the reception of visitors at the Rigakaai. On the first floor there will be a large multifunctional space able to welcome 100 people.
